Sound Absorption Of Glass Wool

Dec. 16, 2019

Glass wool has a good sound absorption function in the middle and high frequencies. The main factors affecting the sound absorption function of glass wool are thickness, density and air flow resistance. Density is the weight of data per cubic meter. Air flow resistance is the ratio of air pressure and air velocity on both sides of the data at unit thickness. Air flow resistance is the most important factor affecting the sound absorption of glass wool. The flow resistance is too small, indicating that the data is sparse, the air oscillation simply passes through, and the sound absorption function is reduced; the flow resistance is too large, indicating that the data is dense, the air oscillation is difficult to pass in, and the sound absorption function is also reduced. With regard to glass wool, there is an optimal flow resistance for sound absorption.

The sound absorption function of glass wool is also closely related to the installation conditions. When there is an air layer on the back of Glasswool Roll, the sound absorption effect is similar to that of glass wool panels with the same thickness and no air layer. In particular, the sound absorption function of the low and medium frequencies will be greatly improved compared to the fact that the data is affixed to the hard bottom surface. The sound absorption coefficient will increase with the thickness of the air layer, but the effect will not be significant after increasing to a certain value.

In the construction and use of glass wool, it is often necessary to add a decorative surface with certain sound transmission effects, such as plastic films less than 0.5mm, metal mesh, window screening, fireproof cloth, glass silk cloth, etc., which can basically adhere to the original sound absorption characteristics. Glass wool has high-quality properties such as fire resistance, heat insulation, and easy cutting. It is one of the most commonly used materials for sound absorption. However, because glass wool is non-decorative in appearance and there are fibers spilled, it is necessary to make various sound-absorbing members for concealment. The most commonly used and low-cost structure is the ceiling of perforated paper-faced gypsum board or perforated board wall made of glass wool. When the perforation rate is greater than 20%, the sound absorption function of glass wool can be fully exerted. In order to prevent glass wool fibers from leaking out, a layer of non-woven fabric, mulberry paper, or other sound-transmitting fabric needs to be attached to the back of the perforated board, or glass wool or plastic film must be used to cover the glass wool. Similar to the perforated paper board, there are perforated metal plates (such as aluminum plates), perforated wood boards, perforated fiber cement boards, perforated mineral wool boards, etc.

The glass wool board can be made into sound absorption ceiling board or sound absorption wall board after treatment. The surroundings of glass wool board are cured by glue and then coated with fire-resistant sound-transmitting fabric to form a sound-absorbing wall panel that is both beautiful and easy to install. There are also sound-absorbing ceiling panels that are directly sprayed with sound-permeable decoration materials on the surface of glass wool. Whether it is a glass wool sound-absorbing wall panel or a Mineral Fiber Ceiling Tile, a high bulk density glass wool is required and must be strengthened to prevent the board from deforming or becoming too soft. This type of construction materials not only has good decoration, but also retains the good sound absorption characteristics of glass wool. The noise reduction coefficient NRC can usually reach above 0.85. There is also an Air Conditioner Glass Wool Pipe with good thermal insulation.

In large spaces such as stadiums and workshops, in order to absorb sound and reduce noise, sound-absorbing bodies with glass wool as the main sound-absorbing material are often used. The sound absorbing body can be made into a plate, a column, a cone, or other shaped bodies according to requirements. The interior of the sound-absorbing body is filled with glass wool, and the exterior is wrapped with a sound-transmitting surface layer. Because the sound absorbing body has multiple external sound absorption, the sound absorption power is very high.

In road noise barriers, in order to prevent noise reflection, it is necessary to adopt sound absorption measures on the side facing the vehicle. Often, glass wool is also used as the filling material and the surface layer is a perforated metal plate. In order to prevent glass wool from absorbing water and moisture outdoors, it is sometimes wrapped with PVC or plastic film.
